DUSTBORN is a Czech metal act, originally rooted in symphonic death metal, now dwelling along the bleak shores of atmospheric black metal. Thematically delves into dystopian visions, post-apocalyptic landscapes, and bleak sci-fi narratives. The founding lineup consisted of Honza, Johny, and Vlajda (ex-DfS), Dan (Arthemion), Aaron, and Venca (ex-Of the Woods, Pyromann).
In 2018, DUSTBORN entered SONIDOS Studio in Brno to record their debut EP, MMXVIII – a first manifestation of darkness, blending an atmosphere of desolation with orchestral elements and death metal intensity. Initially released digitally as a series of singles, it was later issued on CD in 2019 by underground label Narcoleptica Productions, with the physical version including an instrumental bonus track. Music videos for Mind Astray and Depths were created under the direction of Marek "Frodys" Pytlik (Postcards from Arkham), further enhancing the visual dimension of the release.
Shortly before recording their first full-length album Dethroned, vocalist Venca departed the band – a shift that had a profound impact on the album’s direction. Johny, originally handling keyboards, stepped in as the frontman and has remained the voice of DUSTBORN ever since. Dethroned was released in 2019 under Metalgate, receiving praise from both fans and critics alike. The album was also nominated for the Břitva Award in the Album of the Year category.
Press feedback:
"Dustborn surprised with the sovereignty of the record. "Dethroned" is a confident album full of energy and well mastered black/death metal. The record is very balanced and only "Zealot's Lament" stands out. This track hints at the band's great potential towards more variety in their music. Damn good job!" - Metalforever
Shortly after the release of their debut, guitarist Aaron leaves the DUSTBORN ranks. Not long after, Tom (ex-Marked As An Enemy) joins as guitarist. Energized by the new lineup, DUSTBORN released a third official video for the album's opening track River Stained Red, directed by Mejla Basel (Machine Head, Krabathor, Hypnos).
After a series of successful shows in the Czech Republic and abroad, the band was forced into hiatus due to the global pandemic.
In late 2022, DUSTBORN returned with two live-recorded singles, The Sun God and Hodina, captured at Ambit 1084 Studio in Český Krumlov. The music marked a departure from their symphonic roots, moving toward a rawer, more atmospheric and grim sonic identity.
2023 saw the band return to the stage while simultaneously crafting new material for their second full-length album, much of which was conceived during the isolation of the pandemic years. The collaboration with Ambit1084 proved fateful – it was there that Unconcealed Atrocities was born.
Released on October 10, 2024, the album embraces black metal in its dissonant, oppressive, and unorthodox form. Sonically and atmospherically, it pays homage to the classic recordings of the Norwegian scene, while remaining distinct and boundary-defying. Layered compositions, dissonant structures, and a haunting lyrical vision place the album beyond easy categorization.
The CD version followed a month later – on November 10, 2024.
